How many factories are there in the world?

A data-driven sizing of the planet's manufacturing base — how many factories exist, what they produce, and how many people work in them, broken down by vertical, by country and by the era they were built. This is the first of three companion pieces: it counts the factories; the second prices the capital stock behind them; the third sets that against the AI capex supercycle. Every figure is an editorial order-of-magnitude estimate — a sizing exercise, not a census. The methodology is disclaimed in the appendix.

The order of magnitude

“How many factories are there?” has no clean answer because “factory” has no clean definition — it stretches from a five-person metal workshop to a chip fab the size of a small town. The number you get depends entirely on where you draw the line. Count only formally registered manufacturing establishments with ten or more employees and the world holds on the order of ten million factories. Include the long tail of micro and informal manufacturing units — the backstreet workshops of South Asia, the household producers of China's interior — and the count climbs past fifty million. This page sizes the ~10-million mid-sized-and-up universe, because that is where the output, the capital and most of the wage employment actually sit.

The three anchors are firmer than the factory count. World manufacturing value added is about $16.0 trillion, roughly 15% of a $106-trillion world economy; gross manufacturing output (revenue, before subtracting inputs) is more than $42 trillion. And manufacturing employs about 350 million people — roughly one working person in nine.

By vertical and by region

The same base, read two ways. Toggle between region and vertical, and between the three measures — value added, factory count and workers. They tell different stories: China dominates factory counts and workers but a handful of Western and East-Asian economies still hold their own on value added per factory. Food and textiles are the most numerous and most labour-intensive; semiconductors and chemicals carry outsized value on comparatively few sites.

When were they built?

The world's operating factory stock is startlingly young, because most of it was built during the Asian — and above all Chinese — construction boom of the last quarter-century. More than half of today's operating capacity was built after 2010; only around 8% predates 1980. This is the opposite of the Western intuition, where the median plant is decades old and repeatedly re-equipped rather than rebuilt. The vintage of the stock is the hinge between this article and the capital-stock piece: young stock means the world's factories have barely begun to depreciate.

What the numbers say

  • Output concentrates; employment disperses. Six economies produce most of the value; the workers are spread across scores of countries and hundreds of millions of small sites.
  • Value-per-factory diverges wildly by geography. A US factory produces roughly 9.1 $tn-per-million of them; a South-Asian one a fraction of that — the same word, two different economic objects.
  • The stock is young. The world's factories are, on average, a China-shaped object built after 2000 — which is exactly why the capital and depreciation story in the next piece looks the way it does.

Appendix — methodology

How to read this page. This is a top-down sizing exercise, not a factory register. The three global anchors (value added, employment, and a factory-count order of magnitude) are taken from the sources below; the region, vertical and vintage splits are editorial allocations calibrated so the parts sum to those anchors. Treat every number as an order of magnitude — right to within a factor of ~2, not to the decimal.

Anchors

  • Value added ≈ $16.0tn. World Bank / UNIDO put manufacturing value added at ~15–16% of a ~$106tn world GDP. Gross output (~$42tn) is grossed up assuming value added is ~38% of revenue.
  • Employment ≈ 350M. ILOSTAT manufacturing employment, summed across major economies (China ~120M, South Asia ~60M, rest allocated).
  • Factory count ≈ 10M (≳10 workers). Triangulated from the US Census (~250k establishments), Eurostat (~2M enterprises), and China NBS (~500k firms “above designated size” plus a much larger small-firm base). The ~40M micro/informal figure is a deliberately soft upper band.

Splits and reconciliation

Region and vertical rows are allocated to be mutually consistent: the region table and the vertical table each sum to the same $16.0tn of value added and 350M workers. Factory counts use the ≳10-employee definition throughout, which is why India's count looks low relative to its employment — its manufacturing base is overwhelmingly informal and micro-scale.

Vintage

The construction-era split is inferred from the shape of global gross fixed capital formation in manufacturing over time (see the capital-stock piece), weighted toward the post-2000 Chinese boom. It describes the vintage of operating capacity, net of closures.
