Origin

The name comes from Lindy's, a New York City delicatessen where, per Albert Goldman's 1964 essay in The New Republic, comedians reportedly gathered and traded the observation that a comic's expected future run tracked the length of their career so far — a working performer with a long track record was, on this table talk, a better bet for future longevity than a newcomer, regardless of either one's current popularity. Goldman's essay reported the pattern as an anecdote about a specific profession, not as a formal statistical claim.

History and context

The idea moved from anecdote to formal argument in two steps. Benoit Mandelbrot's work on fractals and scale-invariant, power-law distributions supplied a mathematical structure under which a proportional relationship between age and expected remaining life falls naturally out of the shape of the survival curve, without Mandelbrot himself writing about comedians or using the “Lindy” name. Nassim Nicholas Taleb then attached the name to that math for a general readership, mentioning it briefly in The Black Swan (2007) and building the full case in Antifragile (2012), generalizing from Goldman's comedians to any non-perishable domain — books, scientific ideas, technologies, even religions. From there the phrase spread into technology and culture commentary as a compact heuristic for judging whether something new is likely to last.

The core claim: perishable versus non-perishable

Taleb's formulation splits things into the perishable, where age predicts a shorter remaining life (a person, a piece of fruit, a mayfly), and the non-perishable, where age predicts a longer one — a technology, book, or idea that has already lasted a long time is, on this reasoning, expected to last proportionally longer still, rather than being "due" to fail.

The math depends on the survival curve actually being a power law

The proportional relationship between age and expected remaining life is a specific mathematical property of power-law survival distributions, not a property of longevity in general — the claim requires that a given technology or idea's actual rate of obsolescence approximate that kind of distribution, an assumption usually asserted by analogy rather than measured for the case at hand.

It travels online as a defense of whatever is already old

"It's Lindy" circulates in tech and culture arguments as a compact way to argue that an established technology, book, or institution deserves more confidence in its future than a newer competitor, often with the underlying power-law assumption left entirely unstated.

Critique

  • The power-law assumption is rarely checked. The proportional age-to-longevity relationship is a property of a specific class of survival distributions, not a universal fact about non-perishable things — invoking “Lindy” for a particular technology or idea typically skips verifying that its actual obsolescence pattern resembles that distribution at all.
  • It can't distinguish “hasn't failed yet” from “won't fail.” Whatever currently dominates a category will look maximally Lindy right up until the moment something replaces it, and the effect offers no independent way to identify that moment in advance — it describes a track record, not a forecast with error bars.
  • The perishable/non-perishable line is drawn after the fact. There is no crisp rule for sorting a given thing into one category or the other in advance, which leaves plenty of room to apply the label selectively to whichever side of an argument the person invoking it already favors.
  • It has become a thought-terminating one-liner. “It's Lindy” frequently functions online as a complete rebuttal to a new technology or trend, in place of a specific, checkable claim about that thing's expected remaining lifespan.

Impact

The Lindy effect is now a standard reference in debates over whether to bet on an incumbent technology, book, or institution against a newer challenger, and it shares its underlying move with Chesterton's Fence: both put the burden of proof on whoever wants to discard or bet against something that has already persisted, rather than on whoever wants to keep it around. Chesterton's parable asks for an explanation before removal; the Lindy effect goes further and treats mere survival itself as evidence of durability, which is the stronger and more contested of the two claims.
