Hardin's contribution was less the mechanism itself than the memorable name and its extension to a much wider set of shared-resource problems, chiefly population growth against finite global resources.

Critique
- Real historical commons rarely collapsed this way. Economic historians studying actual English common land found it was typically governed by detailed customary rules — limits on herd size, seasonal rotation, local enforcement — that prevented exactly the overgrazing Hardin's model assumed was inevitable in the absence of privatization or state control.
- Ostrom's empirical rebuttal won a Nobel Prize. Elinor Ostrom's Governing the Commons (1990) catalogued long-lived, self-organized institutions managing shared resources across very different cultures and resource types, identifying design principles — clear boundaries, monitoring by the users themselves, graduated sanctions — that let communities avoid the tragedy without either of the two solutions Hardin considered.
- The model conflates open-access with common property. Critics distinguish a true commons — a resource collectively owned and governed by a defined community with enforceable rules — from an open-access resource with no ownership or governance at all; Hardin's essay is really describing the latter, and titling it a tragedy of “the commons” has misled decades of readers into treating shared ownership itself as the problem.
- It gets reached for on both sides of policy fights. The same framework is cited to argue for privatizing fisheries and for treating carbon emissions as a shared trust requiring international regulation — its abstraction makes it compatible with nearly any prescription, which is part of why it circulates so widely relative to how carefully its assumptions usually get checked against the specific resource in question.
